India became the largest producer and exporter of Milk in the world ( A whopping 24 % by volume at that) a few months ago.In the second slot comes in USA.
This event definitely is one of the many single digit accomplishments India has achieved in the global arena in recent times.
Now when we talk about milk we have various sources of it viz Cow milk, Buffalo milk,Goat milk etc predominantly.
But there are two types of it – One containing A1 beta casein protein and the other with A2 beta casein protein.
We have cow milk with both A1 beta casein and A2 beta casein. But Buffalo and Goat milk contain only A2 beta casein protein.
Both have different digestive processes in the human body.
A1 protein type milk digests in the small intestine. An enzyme called pepsin produced by the small intestine itself is responsible to break it down. The bad news is this enzyme releases a by-product called beta caesomorphin-7 which is slightly toxic.
This in turn is responsible for developing type 1 diabetes in children and other stomach dysfunctions for all.
Whereas A2 beta casein protein contained milk digests in the intestine and doesn’t need the pepsin enzyme to digest.
Needless to say that A2 type is absolutely safer.
India can boast of around 45 types of indigenous cows and endemic to India only .
To name a few –
- Gir
- Vechoor
- Kullan
- Kapila,
- Villwadri
- Galiwal
The 2nd,3rd,4th and 5th are endemic to Kerala only- specifically named after Vechoor-Kottayam, Kasarcode and Thiruvilwamala-
These cows sport a humped back ( “Sooryanadi” in ancient Indian scriptures).
The vast bulk of Milk available in our local markets is of A1 type( Milma, Muraliyam etc)
But milk with A2 protein is available in many parts of Kerala (I know 3 dairy farms in Trivandrum itself)
But there is a cost factor involved in getting hold of it.
If one litre of Milma costs Rs 50 , the equivalent A2 costs Rs 120
Let us think about it and disseminate the same in our circles so that our younger and infant generations can secure a healthy lifestyle.
